Let’s start 2025 off right.  Caring for your eyes is an important part of your overall health, but often vision is the most overlooked. A few lifestyle changes can make all the difference.

Here are five ways you can safeguard healthy eyes this year!

1. Schedule a Comprehensive Eye Exam

Regular eye examinations play a crucial role in the early detection of conditions such as glaucoma, diabetes, and high blood pressure, often before other symptoms appear. Delaying treatment for eye conditions can lead to irreversible damage in some cases.

2. Eat the Vision Healthy Foods

Eat a healthy balanced diet that includes a wide variety of fruit and vegetables, particularly leafy green veg like kale and spinach. Adopting a vision healthy diet is essential to support good eye health and reduce the risk of macular degeneration.

3. Quit Smoking

In addition to a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight and keeping your blood pressure under control reduces risk of conditions such as diabetes and stroke, which can affect vision. Quitting smoking can have a positive impact on your eye health, as smoking has been linked to an increased risk of developing cataracts.

4. Take Some Time to Relax

Wear sun protection for your eyes- all year long. Prolonged exposure to screens or sunlight can exacerbate eye issues. Regular screen time detoxes: With more people spending longer on digital devices, the importance of protecting our eyes from strain is greater than ever. The 20-20-20 rule is a simple, free and effective habit for screen users: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.

5. Know Your Family’s History

Many eye diseases seem to have a strong link to genetics. Ensure the chance of better vision for you and the young people in your family by learning more about your family’s medical history, including any eye diseases or conditions. Preventative care includes hereditary history which best helps to maintain 20/20 vision.
